Many of Te Whariki’s learning outcomes relate to the social and emotional learning (SEL) of children and SEL is commonly viewed as the foundation of learning success and school readiness.
Our facilitator will help you to use Kōwhiti Whakapae with a particular emphasis on assessing children’s progress on SEL trajectories and building kaiako’s content knowledge and skill to support them as they do so.
Delving deeper into supporting oral language and literacy
The decline in children’s oral language and literacy capability has been in the media a lot recently. The ability to communicate their needs, interests and ideas is very important for children and lays the foundation for reading and writing in later years.
We will support your team to assess where children are at in their oral language progressions and build teachers’ capability to intentionally strengthen oral language in play-based ways and to establish strong foundations for writing and reading.
Delving deeper into supporting mathematical learning
Maths is an area of the curriculum that many teachers feel ill-equipped to deliver well. Kaiako’s personal beliefs about their own mathematical skills and /or poor content knowledge mean that, often, the naturally occurring opportunities for children’s mathematical learning go unrecognised.
Using Kowhiti Whakapae as a key resource, we will support you to notice learning through a mathematical lens and to plan and implement strategies that develop children’s mathematical capability.
